Review of the Film “Laskar Pelangi”

Laskar Pelangi is an Indonesian film released in 2008, directed by Riri Riza, based on the best-selling novel by Andrea Hirata. Set against the backdrop of the beautiful yet economically disadvantaged Belitung Island, the story follows a group of children attending an underfunded school in the 1970s. The main theme of the film revolves around the power of education and the importance of friendship, as the children, known as the “Rainbow Troops,” fight to achieve their dreams despite facing numerous challenges. In addition to depicting socio-economic struggles, Laskar Pelangi conveys a powerful message about human resilience and unyielding hope.

Summary

The film focuses on Ikal, a bright and passionate young boy, and his friends who attend a small school with only ten students. Alongside their teacher, Bu Mus, they form a close-knit community, determined to face the hardships of life. Critical Evaluation

One of the main strengths of Laskar Pelangi is its ability to effectively depict major themes like resilience, education, and community in an emotional and moving way. This is a very powerful message, challenging the view that poverty automatically limits a person’s potential. Ikal, played by Reza Rahadian, symbolizes the dreams and determination that drive the narrative forward. Reza’s performance is deeply emotional, capturing Ikal’s personal growth as he continues to fight despite facing many obstacles. Bu Mus, portrayed by Cut Mini Theo, serves as a nurturing yet firm mentor who gives the children confidence and hope for the future.
